For the last twenty years the internet has run on the fourth revision of the Internet Protocol (IP). A communication network addressing and routing system capable of supporting around 4 million addresses. Back in the day, I don’t think the original designers ever thought there would be a day when more then 4 million systems would be connected to the network. Yet today with the explosion of IP enabled devices such as cell phones and netbooks, That small network has grown into a global communications platform critical to world commerce and global stability. The internet has outgrown IPv4 and we are now set to run out of IPv4 addresses in the next 30 days.
